Time travel is a classic cinematic imagination. In this film, to travel in time are two extraordinary riders picaresque. They are the only possible pair of modern Italian cinema comedy. They wanted, in this movie, fun to make the biggest ticket in the history of Italian comedy: Toto and Peppino. not import weapons and the battle for freedom of thought is the necessary step of every civilized man, now that new and more powerful threat to the feudalised consciences to the myth of welfare, order and technology. Historical place of choice for this battle has been for centuries the Catholic Church possesses the truth and elettasi target of any polemic aimed at freeing the individual from fear. Today the situation is changing, thanks to the recovery of an area by the church of the value of all religious experience is not compromised by power, but the past is too full of crimes and mistakes because consciousness does not continue to lay draw strict warnings, and see symbolized the risk faced by each company to identify dissidents with heresy. The film by Giuliano Montaldo Giordano devotes hours Bruno is to be read in this perspective. The author's first resignation in fact the ways of the old anti-clericalism. The frequent references to current, ml'orizzonte is much wider: burned yesterday by the priests, Giordano Bruno is now also a victim of Stalinism, the pyre is lit up by the military Greeks and Chileans. His tragedy is that its judges, came to us from the seventeenth century, casts a dark shadow over all our times and on the uncertain future. No ambition in monographic Montaldo. The figure of Bruno is too complex, nourished by religion, philosophy, science, magic and literature, and his life too thick to be hoped that the cinema, this new kind of adult education, is able to fully express. The film therefore only describe the last few years, between 1592 and 1600 and short flash-backs, flash memory, which makes us relive the highlights of the events passed. ; ; Having just been tumultuous
experiments in the European courts, Bruno was in Venice, a guest of Mocenigo hoping to learn that his alleged magical arts introduced him into lavish salons of Venice. Bizarre and contemptuous, Bruno does not mind the booze and the favors of courtesans, but continues to spread his pantheistic conception of the universe and his idea of \u200b\u200ba new man, free from prejudice and in harmony with nature. It is clearly outside the Church, which has good game in return to accuse him of infidelity. When Mocenigo, scared and disappointed, the denunciation to the Inquisition, Bruno ends up in jail. Jealous of its prerogatives, Venice Vatican wants to avoid interference, but the reason of state prevails: Although Bruno has recanted (so you can still be free to think and act), the process moves to Rome. Here the pope, Clement VIII, is full of doubts, because despite being subjected to torture Bruno is back to reaffirm their ideas, and the Inquisition is divided, each seeing in him a weed to be eradicated, others fearing that a conviction bears further damage to the catholicity, already torn by schisms and wars. Quado some of his fellow Glera, denouncing the revolutionary theories, come to the rescue of the more rigid the Inquisition, there is no escape for Bruno. Despite the intervention Cardinal Bellarmine, the most cunning, the persisting hamletic of the Pope, and Bruno himself merely to confess guilt of innocence, the verdict is irreparable. Delivered to the governor of Rome, in February 1600, the Dominican rebel rooms at the stake: a vice, yet closes his mouth, while the meat is burning in the silence of the onlookers. Preceded by a serious documentation, the film continues the discussion on the misdeeds of the power of Montaldo (Gottmit us, Sacco and Vanzetti) with strong moral conscience, satisfactory references to the historical situation, a full staging and a sincere effort to break the knot of the tragic events . The attempt to make Bruno a precursor of socialist revolutionaries, those who criticize the church or simply from the last samples of anti-authoritarianism, and here and there a little 'forced, and leads to schematization ungrateful to those who know the life and work of the philosopher from Nola, but to the extent permitted by the cinema of consumption the human and ideological substance of the drama is expressed in vigorous style. Director of Pulse, Montaldo recalls the pomp and damaging period with full-bodied taste of the atmosphere, and trying in various ways to weave the fabric of the work realistic wires fantastic along which passes the true nature of visionary monk. His Bruno has perhaps a bit 'too much on the features of spiritualism, but otherwise the film would have avoided the shoals of didactic el'uggia of libel. Belong to the repertoire of clichés but the figures of a luxury courtesan, fascinated by the personality of Bruno (the excuse is good to give us a female nude, blatant penalty in even the most serious directors now know how to escape), and 'a young man captured by his example.
These fines, however, do not call into question the structure of the film eloquence. As already happened with the Cavani Galileo, to resurrect a fateful moment in history, and suggest similarities with the present, the work strikes a good balance between entertainment and culture. Gian Maria Volonte, forced to speak with inflection in Naples, yields to temptation some histrionic, but always as a valuable interpreter that gives resonance to every scene. The remarkable photography of Vittorio Storaro, who often tries to make the climate of the time using a color in which the magnificence of the salons and the darkness of prisons merge into a crock of gold. The scenery is good for Sergio Canevari. A tightrope walker body, even by Fakir, sometimes disheartened, cadaverous, and at times flooded with angry, agile, steering wheel, inertia and motion, rocks and wind, at the same time. The independent art, free, dissociated, an arm or a leg of Toto is an individual in the individual, an actor nell'attore. The neck segment, a telescope. And (Muse Neapolitan help me) without a face relationships, indefinable, abstruse, a chimerical world in front of eyes nose mouth cheek-bones, unusual, funny and terrible, which freezes and charms, which stimulates rice and, simultaneously, I do not know that human solidarity and participation.
makes me laugh and sigh jaw shifting of Toto. He, as if he had listened to his surreal connotations (emancipation from every coherence), As if he had thrown in the real contrast, in the melancholy events of each day, it was a well of fine cinematic joy. But, I must repeat, Toto has intelligence of itself, does not live with Toto. It was never tried or guessed, never, has transferred to the screen for twenty years, the variety of Toto. Friend or foe of his art is the unique Toto? Giuseppe Marotta, "L'Europeo, Milan, 7 April 1956.
With "Band of honest" Toto plays one of the most pleasing and realistic roles of his career, poor man, simple and honest, a victim of the offense to those temptations, which characterized the Italian company in the middle 50s. Mastrocinque addresses the issue in light tone, with satire and farce, but always provoking a debate that becomes even deeper by showing that anyone, even the most honest, is immune from the temptation to get rich illegally. The story, conceived and written by Age and Scarpelli proven pair, is well told and supported by an extraordinary Peppino De Filippo and Giacomo Furia height of the two giants.
The character of the poor goalkeeper Antonio Bonocore (attention to the name!) Is complete in its psychological structure and contradictions in his humble, always dominated, at bottom, a high moral conscience, which will bring the end of the film, with a found extraordinarily allusion, the general euphoria, to burn even the genuine notes of his salary. Bonocore is a generous man in his vocation and naive honesty, as evidenced by the scene with his accountant Casoria (Luigi Pavese) in the basement of the building and with the dying Mr. Andrea (Lauro Gazzolo), but also ready and willing to always dream of a future Best, whose contours are blurred and confused ("we must adapt," we must move from the accountant Casoria "," switch sides "). goalkeeper Bonocore, especially in duets with Peppino De Filippo, tends to lapse into caricature and easy to measure its effect, as for example, the persistent and exaggerated confusion on the name of The Turkish. These traits of pure and ancient comedy sometimes turn into a clown Totò Augustus, but not detract from the firmness of character, who just wants to have those traits clownish.
's character epitomizes the "type" of goalkeeper of the 50s, which is a counterpoint to the emerging and rampant Memmo Carotenuto, a representative of that society dawning, busybody and business (as well as the accountant Casoria), parasitic and perishable, destined to many other glories and triumphs over the years. We find ourselves in a true story, believable, even if amplified and transformed by the contributions satirical, burlesque and farcical, with its cellars, its terraces, porches, patios, and above all things, then the characteristic "sentry", which we feel even the smells. The gaze of all, directors and actors, is light and good-natured and the story is enjoyable. In designing the fable of the three poor fellows who plan an enterprise greater than themselves, Age and Scarpelli vaguely anticipate the core fund of "The unknown", which will come out after two years. Mastrocinque penetrates deep into the spirit of the story and Totò, Peppino De Filippo together, can interpret it as serene and never overdo it, though it was practically impossible to give up (and why then?) To the hilarious performances of the clown greatest comedy duo of Italian cinema.

You can see why "The Solitude of Prime Numbers" is collecting a good box office success: a novel lucky, written by the author with the director, it is customary to expect a kind of replay audiovisual strengthened. Despite Saverio Costanzo good credentials, however, the transposition is not appropriate or perhaps, paradoxically, revealing the weaknesses of the best-selling novel by Jordan. Quite effective in describing the horrors hidden in the faces of children and in the Incarnation & disturbing movements of budding actors, the film needs to emphasize each step, the quotient 'art' of the parallel adventures of the protagonists Alice and Mattia. Marked by pain and suffocated by guilt complexes of parents, teenagers and adults will find themselves both foreign bodies of a community that does not accept them or even segregate them: a bustling drama laden with music, expressions, movements that seek the recovery ' atmosphere and capture the effect. Up to a grand finale at all unrealistic, given how the silence of Luke and Dawn Marinelli Rohrwacher, thinking their ulcerated express their sensitivity in a pantomime catatonic clearly programmatic.

"The Solitude of Prime Numbers": psychology between the lines
"The Solitude of Prime Numbers," written by Paul Jordan is a novel that moved, surprised, engaged, excited, also dashed the hopes of someone ...
Since it is so much talk in this office will not discuss the plot nor the style of the book won the Premio Strega 2008. Instead, we want to deepen what constitutes the core of the entire novel, or mental disorders suffered by Alice and Mattia and under what conditions with their relentlessness, the direction of the personal stories of the two protagonists. We do this with an expert in the field, a psychologist who can define a family as it is ... my sister Michelle.
Doctor, what can you tell us about diseases suffered by Alice and Mattia?
The two protagonists of the book by Jordan boys are victims of two very invasive and debilitating disorders. Alice suffers from anorexia, an eating disorder that occurs primarily in adolescence, often due to a stressful event (and here we connect instantly to blunt force trauma experienced by Alice). The disease, in the case of the protagonist, has risen chronic, with progressive deterioration. Alice sees abnormal defect in his body and does nothing to cure, but rather persists in his self-destructive purposes.
The disease has a strong self-defeating Matt: Matt is cut, it stings, takes pleasure in hearing the viscous component of their blood as if with the release of his vital fluid drain even her old sense of guilt and inadequacy. Mattia is on the edge, in a limit state borderline, that turning toward aggression, rather than outside, a balance is an illusion.
Both diseases occur in the players following a trauma: a stressful event can trigger the mechanisms that cause a problem arises with latent strength. Both have a tightening of the defense mechanisms inadequate: what happens when the ego feels threatened and when emotions are denied because they are incompatible with other demands of the personality or social demands dall0'ambiente. Alice and Mattia deny their problems and live permanently stiffened by guilt. Another common point is the presence of a strong blunting of affect, both are denied the joys of childhood and adolescent affective typical. Even in the love stories that live there never transport or emotional involvement. Again Alice and Matt are recognized, are similar, they look without ever crossing a border or just pass by and then return back hurriedly, paralyzed from the discomfort or inadequacy.
Conditions are harsh ones that Alice and Mattia and bring them to certain choices, often tragic and irreversible. But these evils can be cured, you can go?
The novel presents us with a final open to hope, to interpret: both, as after a false start, try to bounce back, hard.
Mattia, stop before sunrise different, pulling from his pocket the mobile number of Nadia: The call really? That will be the external event that will serve as a stimulus to induce him to undertake the difficult road of rebuilding their identity?
And Alice, lying on the bed of the river, back to the origin of his injury: still lying motionless, but not on the treacherous snow this time. This time, with a little 'hard work, can stand alone. What remains, for both, is hoping to recover their lives. Oedipus, son of Laius

Done written by Pier Paolo Pasolini, the film is based on the tragedy "Oedipus Rex" and "Oedipus at Colonus" by Sophocles, written in the V century BC, and personal experiences. It was filmed between April and July 1967 in Bologna, Tuscany and Morocco and in studies Dino de Laurentis (Roma). Nominated for the Golden Lion in Venice, Wins Two Nardo d'Argento.
The action starts year 20 in Thebes (Greece) and ends at the outskirts of Thebes around AD 65. The film contains autobiographical elements of analysis that focus in the first half of the film. Fearful of having the syndrome of Oedipus, Pasolini decides to confront him with the completion of the work. The film places the viewer to a troubling reality to provoke reactions have it: life is a dramatic and tragic experience, the frustration and pain proliferate and imposing, life is capricious and hazardous to humans whom he treats like toys of fate, life appears clad in a bushy appearance of fatalism, misleading and false, which leads people to surrender their future management. The oracle of Apollo is not telling the truth, the destination is not predetermined, fate is not mandatory. Oedipus lacks information on their origins and therefore wrong. Do not know your past and not investigates. Faced with uncertain indications, flees in fear and without thinking. The parable of the young Oedipus suggests the need to seek the truth and abandon the fatalistic myths. Human beings can and should govern their destiny. The parable of the old blind Oedipus suggests that blindness of mind of the young Oedipus was terrible. Pasolini takes up the theme in later works and leads to fever pitch levels in Salt ².
The story mixes fiction and personal recollections in a series of sequences that move the facts from the 20 in Thebes, the last of the WWII in Bologna (where he was born in 1922). Distortion becomes apparent chronological indications ostentatious (monarchical Italian flag hung on a balcony). The events of the 20 to 40, located in Greece (Corinth and Thebes) and the 60's moved to 1965/67 in Bologna. The handling time is a resource that the author uses in other works. In this case we can strengthen the sense autobiographical, to remind the audience that attends a fictional story, to wake him on suspicion of being manipulated, move him to not accept the myth and encourage him to seek the truth. The music incorporates
fanfare, a fragment of the Quartet of dissonance "by Mozart and folk songs in Romania, Japan and Morocco. Photography makes use of a restless, observant camera, performing sweeps of landscape, framed broad perspectives and deep earth tones used in preference. The script, poor dialogue, puts into the mouth of Tiresias claims about the strength and effectiveness of learning. King Laius of Thebes (Luciano Bartoli) and his wife Jocasta (Silvano Mangano) are parents of a child weighing about omens say will kill the father and mother for his wife. Laius ordered a slave to her death on Mount Cithaeron, but softened the leaves. Is collected by a pastor who offers Polybus King of Corinth. He and his wife Merope (Alida Valli) adopt it as a child. Fortunate position lets you take a life of leisure and whims. Visit the oracle of Apollo to know his future. Horrified by the revelations and the purpose of saving the life of Polybus, flees on a journey without destination, which leads him to Thebes. Oedipus, blind, uses the help of a seeing-eye, which is his daughter Antigone.
Oedipus, the son of chaos
Thinking about this tragedy should lead us to wonder to whom it is written. The audience that first received (the Greek people) was so strong that bear the harshness and pain of history. It's all a show tragedy, a window in which to appear at the maximum storm without being touched or a drop, being this itself an educational exercise in which we learn that life often leads to random paths. is a lot of wisdom that can hide a movie based on a Greek tragedy, but as the focus Pasolini's intellect, leads us to think of life as learning and realization of our character assigned by the gods. Finally we just where we started, only having committed numerous errors with a memory of what happened and with a sense of finishing what has been done that makes a certain melancholy without bitterness and without moral judgments. Pasolini filmed
When Oedipus Rex in 1967, all we read Mircea Eliade in The Myth of the Eternal Return. From there, I think reading that made Oedipus Pasolini filmed in Turkey, Bulgarian music. His approach is not from Freud, but the anthropology of religion and social concern and that is why the prologue places the birth of Oedipus in a villa presfascista Lombard Italy, and the epilogue places it, now blind and wandering in the 60 Bologna. Pasolini Unfairly, Oedipus is cursed by fate before birth: it will be husband and son of his mother, father and brother his children, his father's murderer. And it is abandoned in the desert to die. However, the same fate decides not to be so, and Oedipus is picked up and adopted by kings of Corinth. Blind to this truth, he does not know, Oedipus grows happy and proud of himself for being the son of kings, with the blindness of youth unconscious treacherous, but, faced with the unfathomable mystery of the oracle, he will reveal his terrible fate. Oedipus puts his eyes covered in each junction. Turns on itself, unconscious, blinded and destiny takes him, it will gradually lead to the murder of Laius. For a pittance and a misunderstanding pride, Oedipus finds his real father and kills him, ignoring his true identity: that is, kill him blindly. Emboldened, the Sphinx kills also terrifies the Thebans and get the reward-punishment promised to marry the queen Jocasta, his mother. A Jocasta, Oedipus loves her passionately, furiously. Not knowing what is your mother, she is everything you want. And she in him. But the disorder ethical, moral and social causes present when the plague appears and dying animals, men, children across the city. Who says Oedipus is responsible for all this? Oedipus is blind, unconscious, unaware that he is the source of the chaos and destruction. appalled by the crime, hangs herself and Oedipus, now see the reality, is blind. It is the paradox of myth. Take the pin from the dress of her mother and start loving eyes. aspects of Greek tragedy on film: Pasolini's Oedipus

Ancient Greek and Latin cultures are the basis of contemporary European culture. Only the influence of Jewish culture through the branches of Christianity have a comparable presence in this environment. Nothing particular is then that the seventh art to reflect them from their very inception. Plenty of topics about the history of ancient Rome and Greece make some notes on the film as a source of legends classic seasoned to taste of culture consumption of the twentieth century, at least until the sixties, even though they have never ceased to occur sporadically. Since the seventies and before, the TV series also have trodden these paths. This corpus consists of several hundreds of movies reflects, he said, historical arguments turned into reading novels in the style of the historical novel, which is in excellent health and is the subject of recent studies, "which cements the most popular gloss cinematic expressions of Greece and Rome . The historical novel and classical historians themselves, plus the contribution of William Shakespeare, constitituyen most obvious block the presence (Greco) Roman film. But it is only the tip of an iceberg. Classical literature, tragedy, comedy, novel has also treated with some frequency, although not as much as could be expected. And the myth became a legend shot is present in a negligible block of films, whose number ranges from early twentieth century and the fifties to the emergence of the curious phenomenon that was called neomitologismo and lasted an intense decade from the fifties and sixties. In contrast to the historical film, whose most notable works, except the extraordinary Cabiria (1914, Giovanni Pastrone) and Fabiola (1949, Alessandro Blassetti)-are American, the mythological is a European phenomenon, basically British Italian remarkable contributions. The myth, finally, is present in much of the existing universal films, from the interpretations of Freud and his disciples, but the lesser-known influence that culture has contributed to the film classic, has been the narrative theory supporting it from the most basic concepts to the poetics of Aristotle, the first manual renowned screenwriter.

on tragedy and film
The presence of Greek tragedy in cinema is not as common as might be expected. The classic drama, as verbal-is outside the cinema until the invention of sound, although the curious pioneers soon. The first approach should be considered something like 'Art of tragedy': Prometheus and Oedipus Rex in 1908, new approach to Oedipus in 1910. Electra also an American. A final serious attempt in silent period since 1927, Greece finally Demetris Gaziadis director, is Prometheus Bound. This film is a document that records a performance of the play by Aeschylus on May 9, 1927 at Delphi, a historic moment in the recovery of the tragedy as a public spectacle for the Greeks. In this production, which we consider interesting but anecdotal, should skip to the end of fifties, where they again attempt to immortalize a representation of Oedipus, this time the festival Ontario between 1954 and 55. Contributes little except theater history. Another attempt to get closer to the Oedipus of Sophocles is the Saville Phillippe notable film in 1959. Some other films, with varying degrees of success or originality, date from the sixties and early seventies. Perhaps the first attempt to create cinematic rigor is Antigone G. Zavellas (Greece, 1961). Although the sets were theatrical and technique of the actors, there were elements of script, scenery, lighting and other details of adaptation. The only filmmaker who could called 'specialist' in Greek tragedy is Michael Cacoyannis that produced a trilogy of Electra (1961, Greece), The Trojan Women (1971, USA), Iphigenia (1976, Greece). The unexpected success of the first, let him enjoy the prestige necessary to try two more times. The other two did not achieve success, despite the excellent performances of the actresses, music master, photography, including its political value. I'm not going to extend into more historical data. They are worth to put the environment in which Pasolini frames his personal vision of the tragedy in the years when the new waves were already in decline and sought its new routes.
is not uncommon that the filmmakers have sought renewal in a return to the classics. It is true that Pasolini, in dealing with classical subjects, was at that time to move on theoretical and ethical grounds while experimenting with the metaphor, more fortune, as in Theorem (1968), or less, as in Porcile (1969 ) But, probably in personal crisis, Pasolini wanted to make a trilogy, a classic trilogy. Re Oedipus at hand, opened in 1967. The great success of Electra, "commented before, had preceded him and other notable version of Oedipus, by the distinguished British director Philip Saville with an impressive array actors. There are years apart, but should be considered the slow pace of European distribution. Oedipus was followed Medea (1969). But the trilogy was frustrated Notes for an African Oresteia (1970), almost in the same year. It was a curious trial that barely knew the distribution of the film archives at the time. This curious trilogy "classic" clearly revisionist concept of classicism generally preceded his "trilogy of life"-Decameron (1971), Canterbury Tales (1972), The Thousand and One Nights (1974) - the only time a race euphoric depression, which was imposed in Los hundred twenty days of Sodom (1975), on the works of Sade, which probably got the toughest moments in film history (and there is much competition.) Was this his true and ominous tragedy. Gasoline did not survive the work. Was destroyed, they destroyed. Theorem-a little story today cryptic and hard to follow, had been a real punch in the nose of the society of the sixties. The one hundred twenty days of Sodom was a kick and below. Gasoline in 1975 showed that a poet could seek death in his works. But my intention is to try to re Oedipus (1967) and it seems vain to note that Pasolini was paced by tragedy and the myth before reaching the full joyous life of creativity. Do not forget also that if in the sixties the Greek tragedy had opened a gap brief public interest, and before the film authors, the phenomenon also existed in the theater of the time from a few decades earlier. From Pemán Sartre, Cocteau Vallejo, classical theater alive. Pasolini was no stranger to this European trend. He had translated the Oresteia to the popular theater of Vittorio Gassman in 1960 and in 1963 published a version of Miles Gloriosus under the name of Il Vantone. After Oedipus re also undertook the writing of tragedies in verse as Porcile, Gang Bang, Pilade. Became the first film. Pilade premiered at Taormina in 1969. Maybe he did Pasolini-evolution happens sometimes that the poets represented the social crisis that housed.
On Sophocles' Oedipus

As conceived by Sophocles, dramatic plot was discovering the life of Oedipus, by way of research. Many authors have compared it to a thriller. Recall the plot lines. The people of Thebes, Oedipus is presented to their king, to demand the solution of the plague that ravaged the country. Creon has gone to consult the oracle of Apollo at Delphi. The answer is that Thebes must be purified from the blood of its previous king, Laius, who died in mysterious circumstances during a trip. Oedipus curses and condemns the guilty. The chorus of Theban nobles proposed to consult Tiresias, the seer. The query is complicated. The fortune teller gives cryptic answers that irritate the king. Tiresias accuses him finally directly. The king in his confusion progresses and accuses Creon of conspiracy. It comes, face and tertiary dialectically Jocasta. Oedipus gradually intuit the truth. Jocasta account what you know: Laius was killed at a crossroads at the hands of bandits. Oedipus tells his story. He lived in Corinth and marched from there to evade the prophecies of Apollo. According to them, kill Oedipus his father and marry his mother. The fact is that killing a passenger. A messenger arrives from Corinth. Polybus king is dead and Oedipus can claim the crown. Given its concern about the prophecy of incest, the courier confirms that there is no danger: it is adopted. He himself was a child in diapers of a shepherd from the house of Laius. It seeks the pastor, who confirms that the child is, indeed, Oedipus. Back to the palace, where he finds Jocasta hanged and he out his eyes in pain. A servant announces it. Regent Creon and Oedipus is charged with the custody of their two daughters, Antigone and Ismene. King Oedipus moves from happy to be a miserable, unable to help, without country or home. The choir thought-provoking.
And
Pasolini's Oedipus in Pasolini
also carried the nickname "Son of fortune." And it is so misguided. It does not follow at all Sophocles, although he gradually Aceca Avenue work progresses. Pasolini chooses the diachronic narrative. Diegetic narration. And the relative in waves upward sloping. Oedipus goes to the probable misery, the risk of not having a story-a happy childhood and youth. From here, you should go looking for an oracle no less desert-down, lost his fortune, new risk of loss of history itself. Prophecies are against it. Then follows the course of passage marked by the error. The only way that is, to nowhere, is denied. He was away from his destination. Following an attempted acceptance, a violent outburst against those who prevent him from passing. Several deaths. Seems to trace back his fortune and comes to Thebes. Ends with the Sphinx, also in an outburst of violence ", he welcomed him as king and queen marries a widow. Happy maturity. And again the fate that threatens its stability. Other violent reactions against those who oppose his happiness, the happiness of his people, his city. This time, the violence bounces the messenger Tiresias, Creon and Messenger and relentlessly final falls on itself. Loses everything and will miss forever. Pasolini
allowed to start their work with a prologue in Lombardy in the time of his childhood, perhaps in times of any child. A sudden flashback back to the origin of all to a desert location that replaces the Cithaeron, the foundations of European culture: a culture that Pasolini not imagine so pure and classically Greek and playwrights. Thus, the environments are desert, perhaps Mediterranean, but with suggestions, central, with evidence of North Africa. The dwellings are decidedly protohistoric. The headdresses, which are difficult to locate, with a designer's imagination D. Donatti unleashed production limits, as only Pasolini and Vittorio Cottafavi-the master of the "peplum cheap"-knew it, this one with style "kitsch", the one with flashes of anthropological museum. Do not expect a Greece of Doric columns and short tunic. The two finished by Pasolini tragedies happen in some remote place historically, that bases its identity on the mixture: the mixture of Balkan and Moroccan faces with those of boys in the neighborhood of Rome or Naples or the serene classical beauty and Alida Silvana Mangano Valli, in Oedipus or the powerful features of Maria Callas in Medea (1969). Also in the mix of landscapes and architecture primitive, Music, and the sounds used in Oedipus Bulgarians. Bizarre headdresses and weapons. Even landscapes contrast between the countryside around the scene of the prologue and the desert environment almost all the rest.
An epilogue returns the story to a contemporary moment in which Oedipus blind, walk, unable to perceive unaided life goes on around them. Still, walking and walking, accompanied by seeing-eye that was already in ancient tragedy. From the steps of bourgeois culture to the suburbs is looking for something that escapes us: The landscape of her childhood, when his mother took care of him. Perhaps one Athens you accept, a Theseus who host them. Working-class neighborhoods were, in short, the land that deserved the blessing that God had promised for the last residence of Oedipus. The landscape near his childhood, the mother's womb you want to retrieve.

can interpret the work as reported in three movements and epilogue, where the first movement would correspond to the Italy of 1920, the second exposure to the teaching of the myth, the third to the conversion of myth in tragedy, the epilogue Oedipus the erratic start to the final based search.
Oedipus and neuroses

Audiences not praise this flirting with time, by making the story of Oedipus in a long flashback to the origins of civilization, a flashback that takes the place of an elliptical narrative that robs us: the life of another Oedipus, Oedipus modern happened to draw the attention of his mother, to show his father that he was not the only man at home, blind to wander the streets. Perhaps the life of the modern Oedipus, whatever it is, is a wandering in search of identity. And that, when discovered, no Oedipus is able to deal with it and prefer to deny the vision. Roberto Laurenti has rejected any reading Pasolini psychotherapy of his work, which was interested only a political interpretation "modern" Oedipus leaves the city center to find a proletarian environment.

However, to reject interpretations both psychological and anthropological educated, Pasolini exudes wisdom in both fields. It is not easy to accept that innocence. For example, Oedipus's father takes him by the legs and feet the creature is tied ancestral life. A brilliant concatenation syntax serves as a link with the "flashback." In a reading psicoanalítica1, foot means the soul, the soul that leads Oedipus wound in his existence: man must be a nervous and insecure, which will seek its equilibrium without his own spirit-killing the father and dedication to earth-marry the mother. Or to the contrary, renounce his evil spirit, kill the father-and focus on the sublimation of earthly marry the mother. No matter award the positive role either. Always remain functional opposition. Oedipus generates a nervous man who loses his temper. It is easy to overlook how precisely are the traits of uncontrolled treated Oedipus in Pasolini's work. Is he just as well, who better reflected in the film the basic innocence of the character. Fortune, in effect, you drag. There is no sin in it. Only left to their fate. Carried away by circumstances. Is left wanting when he wants, but fled when their presence may be harmful. Flee when you think you can damage the parent that is natural. Run away when the cause of the plague. This is where you leave and where you check the lot, is gone.
And a few drops of "Poetica"
is true that these observations lead us to Aristotelianism present in Pasolini's Oedipus. Aristotle, in fact, recommended in his work, Theophrastus then develops the idea, that the nature of the characters to be expressed in their actions and should not be reported. Insecurity psychoanalytic reading that brings the character of the myth of Oedipus, it shows in their hesitations and nervisiosismo in reaction to the Sphinx and Layo. Jocasta's passivity is also a character trait that defines it. Is able to access, resignation, work. Courageous women do not respond to classical canons. Medea is something else. Has features divinizing. In re Oedipus, let one part of the action is justified in critical incidents and the solution is given by recognition, the recognition of their own personality to him unknown. Nurses, messengers, servants are respected. There's even a chorus that does not recite, in Medea, yes at times, "a person choir, the people you need the author pressed for exhibition dialectic. The dialogues agonizing, finally, serve as a vehicle for confrontation with Creon and Tiresias. This technique Aristotle begins with the 'tragic' as opposed to the legendary, explained as oriental models.
To avoid hagiography
re Oedipus interest lies in its history and the way it is told, and in its temporary space environment, landscapes "inside" his study of the human soul the strange selection of music. Is an important film, but not a movie round. Above all, there are vast differences in interpretation. Faced with a remarkable image of Silvana Mangano, who has just-as befits Jocasta-text available, Franco Citti gives the type that Pasolini wants, but is unable to say the text. As Ninetto Davoli. Dan type, but are unable to speak. They say that Pasolini film I knew nothing when he started learning it and that was self-taught as they tell of Orson Welles. Neither one nor the other is in fact credible. Pasolini may not have been trained in the technique of the screenplay, but his training in the classics amply compensated. His narrative is correct. Slow to the overwhelming, but it was the fashion of the time and he was recognized Mizoguchi stylistic debtor. Take for re Oedipus story that triumphed in Japan, when Europe, except France and-relatively-Italy, had been ignored. Was able to put their theoretical knowledge of the narrative, and experience in script was already known when re Oedipus rushes. But the concept of production control which should clothe the director, is not the same in the U.S. than in Europe. If Welles had secured the technical control of the film, Pasolini no. So the first work of Welles is a masterpiece. Why did Pasolini masterpiece ever. Create intelligent men he thought Welles-and it is true in American cinema. Intelligent men in Italy -Or Spain-created, but leave the "finished" fatal. Pasolini failed in the assembly, the pace and direction of actors, who preferred to turn to avoid trouble.

"Sons of Fortune" and a mother
Oedipus was high on site pasoliniana required. A tragedy foretold. His work is full of "children of fortune." It seems, therefore, we should interpret the error, the inability to stabilize one of the key issues in Pasolini and that is also looking at its tragedies theme "classic." In Oedipus and Medea is clear. In Notes for an African Oresteia not tell. The documentary is purely a trial, seems to be devoted to humans as a species, forgotten modern peoples, but also to the origins of civilization (an African origin). Orestes was also called to live in Pasolini a rite of passage, where Africa would represent the current version of the classical: Orestes bring democracy to Africa as a modern Argos His work, in fact, is full of children and a mother. As he turns father figure, just a wife. Accatone (1961), which follows the line of his novels - "Ragazzi vita" and "A violent vita," is already a boy seeking his place in life, a boy who feels no need to adapt to what is socially correct to start a family should. There is no place for him. Shortly ago, follows the paths that are presented and no leads to port. It is, yes, a character will archangelic as Jesus Christ The Gospel According to St. Matthew (1964) or Theorem Young (1968). Also Mamma Roma (1962) presented the boy with no place in life and, even more than Accatone (1961), and then an introduction that leads to death.

And I have not come without meaning to the theme of initiation, because Pasolini adapted the story of Oedipus re (1967) to highlight this aspect, which fails to crown, but will resume in Medea (1969), where he takes on a conscious and didactic. If Oedipus is brought up for adoption and we see with the youth of his time, Medea Jason presents a pupil of Chiron, a centaur taking when the camera is the point of view of the child and man, when one has already " use of reason. " It is a simple and educational interpretation of the myth that Pasolini. Both young, as young Pasolini's life, they develop in their midst, but aspire to the family when they know it. Neither nor any other hero pasoliniano, get indefinite stability. In Medea even Jason's character loses his role, although the story has begun narrating his life and his adventures as in Oedipus re. Jocasta is a quite dull and not the fault of Pasolini. The tragedy does not give a really big role. In fact, the version that gives discussed features Polybus's wife, the adoptive mother of Oedipus that he worships and gives the sweetness that the years had given to Alida Valli, one half aside and actress at the time, but had its moments of splendor in the forties and fifties melodramas usually torn. Jocasta chose to Silvana Mangano, who represented a mysterious wife and unsatisfied, which influenced later theorem character, where the angel pass away her husband and takes her bed. The prototypical mother had been years ago Pasolini, Mamma Roma, Anna Magnani overflowing with love, energy and dignity. Pasolini Maria Callas The shapes in his work, always reminded me of Anna Magnani, especially at times when reciting the poems that Pasolini himself added to the text tragic.

Pasolini, the myth and the public

re found in Oedipus myth and history, Pasolini and his past, he and his audience, in a complex. Pasolini's Oedipus as an insight addressed and will autobiographical. Wanted to investigate the origins of his existential angst, but sought to transcend the tragedy and better approach to "popular origins of the story", to achieve a modern reading of the classic myth, its universal values. Metaphorical autobiography, which is scored to create a modern Layo officer, as Pasolini's father could be the autobiography of half of humanity seeking its path. An essay, after all, about psychoanalysis and myth, as he considered all ideology inherent in the parent-child relationship. The beginning of the work is lyrical as poetry is childhood -The idea is repeated in Medea, and the past, surrealistic as remembrance. The long and difficult flashback where myth and tragedy are intertwined, then, the dream of the collective unconscious. The turn-entry into reality-an absolute present, presents the subject-only metaphorically blind man whose neurosis deserve attention. In Sophocles, the causes of neurosis are represented by the gods. But nothing is under human control, the subject is not prepared to face the facts and this generates tragedy. Sophocles' Oedipus is innocent, is not actively involved in anything. Pasolini decides to emphasize this idea, making his character into someone who gets carried away and wonder why nothing, not an intellectual, and never are his characters ("except perhaps in Theorem?).
had planned to shoot in Romania, where he thought he had found ancient European landscapes. Not so. Paradoxically, the past had disappeared under the industrial revolution. However, he found the music in a folk song where the Arabic, Slavic and Greek mixed in difficult discrimination. If few people would recognize these melodies, the music would be out of the story, as was the case with Oedipus had imagined.
also felt the need to subtract solemnity the tragic story. Should reach everyone, however contradictory thought the static narrative style oriental style. I also wanted to oppose the Hollywood melodrama, with the costumes and props with wicker, leather, sheepskin or goatskin, colored stone ornaments or shell.
With all this effort was designing the public who wanted to reach. But he failed: the work was and is important for intellectuals.
Among the various relationships were established between film, myth and tragedy of Electra Cacoyannis to Dassin's Phaedra, through the analogy between the Oresteia and the return of soldiers of the Korean War that occurs in The Manchurian Candidate of Frakenheinmer-all of the 60, Pasolini's contribution is the most rigorous in that it includes a research, analysis and study sources of treatment and a translation by the author. His tragic trilogy is a classic demonstration of the foundation of modern culture in Europe, anywhere and at any time, as all film production is based on that culture, even ignoring it. Pasolini used psychoanalysis to emerge that consciousness and left, among other literary works, his re Oedipus, Medea and test your Appunti per un Orestiade Africa. Scholars the classical world and its traditions should also not ignore. - PCL

Peppino Impastato
By Sandra Russo

Cinisi is a Sicilian village who spent many decades deep in the black suit their men and dresses of their women. Just around 1960 Cinisi gained some fame among American mafia circles because he became a key center of the Cosa Nostra. The men dressed in black suit with thin mustache and olive skin, stored and distributed heroin. It was a small town. These men were almost all men. Cinisi worked together in the 'Ndrangheta Calabria and the Neapolitan Camorra. One of the local chiefs was Luigi Impastato. His son, Peppino, was a poet, journalist and communist who the dominant story has been swallowed, but whose life is a movie that can be seen these days in Europa Europa, The hundred steps were separating the house Pe-ppino of Gaetano Badalamenti, his "uncle" and a murderer.
Life of Giuseppe Impastato, a contemporary generation that the world portrayed in the '60s and '70s phenomena as diverse as the French May, the hippies, the Beat Generation, Guevarism and all aspects of political vanguards and aesthetic of much of the world, also Sicily reached the dark, and there is the story of Giuseppe Impastato, her mother and the forgotten phenomenon: Cinisi was the town in which the mafia was installed in each family, and were the children and women of the mafia those who fought them. It was a political struggle and subjective. Each fought from the political, from the familiar, the collective and personal. The Peppino Impastato was a battle of significant moral dimension.
Peppino's father, chief, paid tribute to Gaetano Badalamenti, strong name of the Cosa Nostra, which articulated the heroin to the United States. The town enjoyed economic tranquility in the houses, nothing was missing, children studied. The problem was that. The children began to question the mob mentality in which they had been educated. Began to tear with the nails the web of moral assumptions that had grown between them all, calling "uncle" every man in black suit, feeling a family commitment to the mafia structure that drowned. Because they better than any viewer of the Godfather saga knew that an "uncle" wanted dead could appear suddenly, and did not have to ask for explanations. They were trained for the life of the mafia. They had to adapt their emotions and their sensitivity to it. In
Cinisi was the only case in which the complainant of the mafia were "repentant" trying to save their lives, but children and women who had never entered in the circuit except emotionally. Not violated the omerta, the code of silence, because they had never made the deal. Just be freed from that for which they had been educated. Peppino belonged to a family whose three generations had belonged to the mafia. Gave an open struggle, politics, which many described as a suicide because, indeed, finished killing him at age 24 in 1978. I called attention to the age and year.
Peppino's mother, Felicia Bartolotta, accompanied him in his struggle. She was married to a mobster, but came from a family outside the famiglia, so he gave the child the gift of the doubt. The women were the transmitters for excellence among future code "men of honor." In 1963, an "uncle" Peppino, Cesare Manzella, a capo, was killed in one of the Alfa Romeo loaded with TNT that were hallmarks of the Sicilian Mafia at the time. Peppino was only 15, but was then that he began his activism. He joined the left, and at 17 he was a leader who filled the town square. Editing a newspaper, the socialist ideal, which their colleagues denouncing the mafia activities their parents, uncles, neighbors. When Peppino wrote the article "Mafia: a mountain of shit", his father threw him out of his house. Paternal protection is broken. The expulsion amounted to turn the child into a moving target.

Peppino's militancy other classic concerns included the left of those years. From criticism of the position and Drogon hippie to elude her political struggle, until the complaint against the Communist Party when it was allied with the Christian Democrats. These allegations and made from Radio Aut, an innovation for the time: Peppino was a communicator during his daily transmission time in silence and kept his ear to the radio all the people. It was a satirical program, foul-mouthed, outrageous, in which every so often the object of their mockery and imitation was a mafia boss recognized by all his followers. Cinisi spoke of as "Mafiópolis" a city that did not accept the murder, was killed.

During those years, Peppino knew that if the boss Badalamenti forgave her life was about the survival of the mafia code, that somehow his life was proof that still hung over him the forgiveness of the famiglia. As Radio Aut began to be increasingly explicit and radical in their complaints satirical most obvious was that Peppino was testing the limit, and everyone knew he, too, would come.
The limit was so wild and exemplary May 8, 1978, when a group of men in black suits to Peppino kidnapped off the radio. He was taken to a house near the railroad tracks Palermo-Trapani. They beat him to death with stones, then placed his body surrounded by sticks of dynamite on the tracks. next day, the Corriere della Sera headlined: "Fanatic left shattered by his own bomb on the railway." That same day, far from Cinisi the corpse of Aldo Moro was kidnapped and murdered by the Red Brigades. The armed struggle of the Brigades helped to pass the crime of Peppino as a "terrorist act failed." Peppino huge history and was swallowed by time, by the Mafia, by the complicit media and the armed struggle, which never participated in disgust as he was, deep, existentially, by violence where he grew up and died.
Friends and colleagues gathered in his body bags on the day of his death, then the trial prompted for years that no judge would take. But it was tough. In 2002, Gaetano Badalamenti was finally sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Peppino Impastato. Page 12, March 5, 2011

In 1953 (a years before the film by Vittorio De Sica) was published the book "The sea is not wet Naples" by Anna Maria Ortese, which won the Viareggio Prize ex aequo with "Tales of the duchy in flames" by Carlo Emilio Gadda. Ortese was part of the book of investigative journalism also called "Golden Fork" that had already been published in 1951 under the title The World The mob queen. As I post here is a short track because it seems very modern, and because, after the release of De Sica's film, there were conflicts of Naples lit image that came from the books of Marotta and that is quite different from the books that came out of Rea, Prisco, orthoses.

Here is the song of Anna Maria Ortese: "did not need long to realize that the feelings here had been a cult, and for that reason had fallen into vice and folly, and finally a race devoid of all logic and reason, had clung to this tumult of formless feelings, and the man was now shadow, weakness, neurasthenia, resigned shameless joy and fear. A pittance without form, silent as a spider, undid his own way, and renewing those poor tissues, clogs more layers minimum of the people, here is the queen. Think it was extraordinary how, in place to reduce or stop, the population grew, and extending more and more bloodless, terribly confused ideas of government, while swelling of pride and strange strangest hopes the heart of the clergy. "
The words of Ortese express well the motives of some criticism of the episode "Pizza on credit, generally known as the episode of Pizzaiola, twenty year-old Sophia Loren. An episode Boccaccio, but far from cheerful. pizzaiola Sofia (Sophia Loren) is kissing in the early morning with her lover Alfredo (Alberto Farnese), a shoe salesman, but has to leave quickly because it is too late: her husband Rosario (James Fury) is waiting in the pizzeria. Sofia is covered with a sweater (not that much, it keeps your chest in plain sight) and walk down the street happy. He stops in church, so you see: going to church was an excuse to be absent.
The pizzeria is a room on the alley. Husband and wife prepare the pizzas, the wife is at the forefront for reasons that today would be called marketing. Attract customers with cries laudator about the pizza being prepared. In a low voice arguing. Rosario frowning this morning is more than usual, both for the delay is because he does not want Sofia monsters as: "Cover up, cover," he says constantly. Sofia pretends to believe him, but look what happens in the alley, including a trooper who stopped and made a joke and a sign. Who knows, no one keeps it, the pizza maker Sofia. Do people stay just ready to take the pizzas, and there is a notebook in which Sofia transcribes the names for the next payment. The pizzas are supplied to the inhabitants of the alley also basket dropped through the windows. Suddenly, the drama. It 'disappeared the emerald ring that Sofia always wears on his finger. Rosary in outburst, was the expensive engagement ring he had given her. Sofia, a bit 'lost, reflects and understands where it can be the ring but can not say. Claims that it certainly fell into the dough while making the pizza, some customers will be finished by the morning. It forms a procession in front of the spouses pizza behind a crowd of curious people who want to know is where did the ring with emeralds. But the initial investigations do not give good results. Sofia, however, the street finds a way to communicate with a single gesture lover Alfredo that the ring is gone. Alfredo understands and sets to work, know where to look. Sofia it follows (all time gained, Alfredo, her lover and seeker loop). Don Peppino's wife is dead. The tragedy dominates in that house. Next to Don Peppino are desperate friends, all men who sustain it and help in any way. Don Peppino escape their consolations and runs to jump on the terrace below. He hesitates a moment, so friends can riacchiapparlo a moment before the fatal act, he nearly threw it. Then do sit at the table, standing around. The women were absent because they were preparing an abundant room for Don Peppino. Mo 'pasta is ready and weeping Don Peppino begins to eat: the pain exacerbates his natural appetite.
So wrote Guido Aristarchus on Cinema Novo, 1955: "Take for example the episode of tomato sauce. It goes beyond the narrow limits of the drawing fun with a character that belongs to another chapter of the book, Death in Naples. So we do not enjoy more, or just do not enjoy, "the scandal of the Emerald Ring," but we focus on a character typical of the Neapolitan, that his tendency toward theatricality and excessive drammaticizzazione. Spiritism Don Peppino Finizio calls his wife just died, you struggles in the arms of friends, you want to kill: with a kitchen knife, throwing himself against a mirror, jumping from the balcony, but pretends as if he were on stage: this fiction, highlighted by a particular (prior to the act of jumping, he turns back and looks forward to the friends they have grabbed), lacking in the book. "
Then everything near her placed (picture below). Alfred, requested by pizza spouses, says that yes, this morning, found a pizza in the ring of Sofia, and returns with galenteria. A true gentleman. Rosario surprised that note in the notebook does not appear that the creditors took a morning Alfredo pizza. " In fact I have not got one, but two, "replied Alfred. Sofia confirmation and everything goes fine, except that Rosario is increasingly frowning. Sooner or later you'll get used to, give it time.

A simple and sincere film, like some bad words, how certain songs. Snatch smiles and laughter to audiences, will bend the edge to those who are or think they are fine. And if they do not have wrong, but the film is lively, motivated, color, and the simpler dialect theater. This Angelina, language and hand lesta very nearly ready, this Angelina gradually became the most listened-to voice and sincere ward Pietralata, and guides the other wives, her companions in hardship and misery, the first to rob the warehouse of a black Borsari, then to "occupy" a tower block, is a figurine of our war. Would have only the rawness of a small piece of news, the emphasis would have at most a bit of a sticker 'bitter a humorous weekly, if not benefit the Roman with his witty flavor, in a continual "baccaja' in where the viewer can also more willing to find a pale echo of Meo Patacca and Pasquino. Film vociato everything, everything screamed, his best traits are episodietti boot, in fast and thick brushwork of the environment, in direct references to real life today and yesterday.

When attempts drammetto made of anger and emotion, the poor Angelina had been duped by those who believe a benefactor, rejected and ridiculed by those who had been to her, in her own way, benefit, then the film turns out to be very brisk, a folksy summary, from a repertoire of Govi \u200b\u200bor Casaleggiu. But almost all the time, it imposes Anna Magnani. We honor nell'onorevole actress Angelina, by far the best I have this day our cinema. Director of herself, abandoned his working-class temperament, willing and determined nell'imbruttirsi indefinitely, just as ugly and hideous need a melancholy character, a character, its range is always high, bordering the shrill, and is instead rich in inflections wise and instinctive. Open City had it revealed, there Mrs Angelina confirmation, and, given the coarseness of the tasty and unceremonious film, there is all the more welcome this confirmation.
